The Pearl was written by John Steinbeck. It is a story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man’s nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the possibilities of love. In the town La Paz they tell the story of the great pearl- hoe it was found and how it was lost again. They tell of Kino, the fisherman, and of his wife, Juana, and of the baby, Coyotito. And because the story has been told so often, it has taken root in very man’s mind.
Kino lived in a brush house in a village, according to the house he lived in , we can know that he is a poor fisherman. One morning, Kino sees a scorpion beneath, his son Coyotito’s shoulder, landed and struck, the baby has been stung. A baby could easily die from the poison. Kin’s wife Juana stands fatigue and hunger almost better than Kino. She wants to get the doctor to cure her baby, but the doctor was so racist and unconcerned, because Kino did not have money. So he won't come. So Kino and Juana should go to the sea and pray to find a pearl with which to hire the doctor to cure the baby. Later, they find a pearl of the world. Kino can become a rich man because he had found a great pearl, and he hopes the pearl can be valuable and bring luck and turn life to be better, of course, the main thing is to cure Coyotito. The second day a doctor comes to cure the baby, but he was insincere and pretended benevolence, everything he did was because he wanted the pearl. Also in the town, in separate offices to gibe a semblance of competition, the news stirred up something in finitely black an evil in the town, but Kino and Juana did not know. Then Kino was going to sell his pearl, but those dealers are shameless and try to get the pearl by cheating Kino. So Kino said his pearl is not for sale to them. That night, Kino was attacked in the dark and killed a man so he has to go north. However, the pearl started to bring evil things. During the time that to get away form a stricken area, they had been trailed by trackers’ tracks and traced when Kino fought with the trackers, he heard the cry of death, suddenly he had a strange idea. He went back to the place were he had lived before,. Finally, he throw the pearl back to the sea at the end.
I enjoyed the plot because it’s very interesting and teaches
us some principle about life. However, the plot also can let us comprehend
the evil in society. The title is very important with the book, because
all things told in the novel were around the pearl, and all the good and
evil things happened when the pearl appeared.
